Know how to begin early math with the things you already use.
Your child lines up spoons, sorts socks, or turns a lid to make it fit. How do you join in? The Math Between Things is an illustrated, Montessori-Inspired parent guide for shared early math with children ages 3–6. It gives you a starting action, something specific to notice, and a small way to help when help is welcome.
English digital PDFs in A4 and US Letter. Household objects are not included; no physical product is shipped.
Download format: 4 PDFs in A4 and US Letter. Download each PDF separately or use the optional ZIP. Both paper sizes contain the same content. Open the Complete Guide first; the Print Companion contains optional cards. Choose your paper size when printing.
Two bowls. One place to begin.
Imagine a quiet moment at the table. You have two sturdy, nonbreakable bowls and two suitable spoons. You want to try a little math together, but you're unsure what to say or whether to correct what happens.
The guide gives you one invitation: “One spoon for each bowl.” Put the bowls apart and keep the spoons together. If an example is welcome, place one spoon and leave the other for your child.
Now there is something specific to notice: one object moving toward each place. Your child might pair the spoons, gather both in one bowl, or watch. If help is welcome, point to an empty bowl and pause. If collecting becomes pretend play, you can join that safe play. If your child is finished, put the materials away.
The guide keeps a next step beside each activity.

Help for the next decision
- Unsure what to say? Each Math Lens has a short invitation and a starting arrangement you can show.
- Unsure whether to help? Observation prompts name the action to look for, with small ways to help if your child welcomes them.
- The starting action feels too easy or too much? Three flexible paths let you keep a few objects visible, change one condition, or invite a prediction through action.
- The plan changes? The guide explains how to simplify, follow safe changes in play, or finish without persuasion.
Its adult loop is simple: Anchor. Offer. Follow. Use a stable boundary, make one brief invitation, and follow the action you actually see. Each Lens includes three flexible paths:
- Explore: make the relationship visible with a few objects.
- Build: change one condition, such as quantity or arrangement.
- Reason: invite a prediction, repair, or explanation through action.
Choose by familiarity and interest. A child can Explore one Lens and Reason within another; there is no fixed order to complete.
What is included
- Four PDFs: a 34-page complete guide and a five-page optional print companion, each in A4 and US Letter.
- Eight Lenses covering one-to-one matching, counting, comparing amounts, breaking groups apart, sorting, patterns, turning and fitting, and comparing lengths.
- Starting actions, observation prompts, small ways to help, everyday material swaps, and ideas to revisit.
- The companion includes print notes, eight child-choice cards across two pages, an adult quick reference, and a recovery guide.
That is 39 pages of content supplied in two paper formats.

Your first try
Read the adult-responsibility page on page 5, then begin with Lens 1 on pages 6–8. Gather a few suitable objects and choose a clear surface or boundary. Read on screen or print only what helps. The choice cards are optional; your child can also point to one on screen.
Before you choose
Do I need worksheets or specialist materials? The activities use ordinary objects. No worksheets are required. Adults choose and check materials for the child and setting, supervise, and manage cleanup.
Is this a complete math curriculum or assessment? No. It is guidance for shared exploration. The observation prompts do not measure mastery or diagnose ability.
What if my child stops? Finish without persuasion. The guide includes ways to simplify a confusing action, follow safe changes in play, and recognize when to stop.
Choose one Lens and begin with one visible relationship.
