Let the picture carry some of the work

Instead of asking a wide-open question in a difficult moment, choose two familiar options that are safe and realistic for your home. Say the ending once, show the cards, and give the next step time to become clear.

The cards support participation and a visible next step. They are not a reward chart or a way to require an immediate choice.

What the cards help you do

  • Show two choices at a time — Keep the rest out of sight and reduce the number of decisions.
  • Use ready-made or familiar options — Begin with 12 illustrated cards or add your own picture and words to a DIY template.
  • Make a short sequence visible — Add the First–Then strip when a two-step view would be useful.

Four printable pages, kept intentionally small

  • Parent Quick Start page with three simple steps
  • 6 everyday cards: Water, Snack, Book, Blocks, Outside, and Bath
  • 6 calm-and-care cards: Toilet, Cozy Spot, Draw, Play Dough, Help Me, and Together
  • 3 blank DIY templates matching the ready-made card size within each paper format
  • One First–Then strip: FIRST — SCREENS ARE DONE / THEN — PLACE A CARD
  • Two separate 4-page PDFs: A4 and US Letter

Cut only the two choices you need

  1. Print Pages 2–3 on regular paper or cardstock.
  2. Cut two familiar, safe choices and keep the rest out of sight.
  3. Say, “Screens are done,” and show the two cards.
  4. Add the First–Then strip only when a visible two-step sequence would help.

The goal is not to remove every feeling. It is to make the first next step visible and familiar.

A visual prompt—not a reward chart

The cards do not set your family's screen-time limits, ask a child to earn screen access, or guarantee an immediate choice. They make one or two already-approved next steps visible after the screen turns off.
